Lahanorizo – The Greek Cabbage rice

The most delicious Lahanorizo you’ve ever had! If you are looking for a risotto alternative then the Greek Cabbage Rice is just what you need! A delicious and nutritious vegan recipe that your family will love!


The Greek Lahanorizo

The basic ingredients for a Greek Lahanorizo are: rice, cabbage, tomato juice, and lemon juice. Anything else or extra is fair game to every home cook. I used my grandma’s recipe as a base and enhanced it to something that everyone in my family enjoys eating! Try it out and you will most likely be asking for a 2nd serving!

Serve Lahanorizo with greek yogurt or Feta and a little spearmint on top

Lahanorizo – The Greek Cabbage rice

Prep: 10m | Cook: 30m | Total: 40m | Serves: 4


  • 1/4 of a medium Cabbage cut into thin strips
  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of Garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 Tomatoes, grated
  • 200g medium grain Rice or Arborio (1 teacup)
  • 500ml Water (2,5 teacups)
  • 2 small Carrots, grated
  • 70g Tomato paste (2 Tbsp)
  • 1 Apple grated
  • 1/3 cup Parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Mustard
  • A pinch of dry Spearmint
  • 4 Tbsp Olive oil, extra virgin
  • Juice from ½ lemon (3 Tbsp)
  • 1 pinch of Salt & Pepper


  1. Sauté the onion with the olive oil in a pot over high heat.
  2. As soon as the onion turns white, add the garlic, cabbage, carrot, salt, and pepper.
  3. Saute them for a couple of minutes until they wilt and add the tomato paste, the grated tomatoes, parsley, and spearmint.
  4. Bring to a boil and add the rice, the grated Apple, 500ml water, and the juice of ½ lemon.
  5. As soon as the water boils, lower the temperature to the lowest on the stove and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
  6. After the rice is cooked, add 1 Tbsp mustard, mix well, and the Lahanorizo (Cabbage rice) is ready.
  7. Serve with a few slices of lemon and feta or yogurt.


  • I used 3A Carolina rice in the making of this recipe.
